  • Revealed: new doubts on Blair's Iraq dossier - Dramatic new evidence from the intelligence services casts fresh doubts over Tony Blair's central claim that Iraq continued to produce chemical and biological weapons until the outbreak of war, The Observer can reveal. - Newly disclosed Cabinet Office documents show that the Prime Minister's categorical assertion was based only on a single source and was attacked as 'too strong' by a senior intelligence official. The same official attacks the dossier's descriptions of the graphic effects of mustard gas and VX, a nerve agent, as 'grossly misleading'.
  • Blix criticises UK's Iraq dossier - Former UN chief weapons inspector Hans Blix accused the British Government of using spin in its controversial dossier on Iraq's weapons of mass destruction. - " Advertisers will advertise a refrigerator in terms they do not quite believe in but you expect governments to be more serious and have more credibility " :Hans Blix : "But in the Middle Ages people were convinced there were witches. They looked for them and they certainly found them. "This is a bit risky. I think we were more judicious, saying we want to have real evidence."
  • Lib Dems seize Brent East victory - The Liberal Democrats have snatched one of Labour's safest seats with a victory in a key north London by-election. - Commentators are linking the Labour defeat with Tony Blair's decision to go to war with Iraq, and anger among the party's traditional voters over the involvement of the private sector in public services.

I think you should redraft the para."
  • Hoon: We let public think 45 minutes related to WMD - Geoff Hoon admitted yesterday he knew the "45-minute" claim at the heart of the Government's dossier on Iraq's weapons of mass destruction related only to battlefield arms and not strategic missiles.
  • Kennedy takes aim at 'President' Blair - Charles Kennedy will today make his most outspoken attack on "Tony Blair's presidential style of government" and claim the Prime Minister headed a small clique which drove the country to war. - He will accuse Mr Blair and his inner circle of seeking to "manipulate, not tell it like it is" and say the revelations from the Hutton Inquiry and the Intelligence and Security Committee are so unsettling that MPs would never have agreed to go to war if they had known the facts.
  • Blair's Popularity Plummets Over Iraq Inquiry-Poll - Blair's ratings have slumped over the summer so that now 61 percent of voters are unhappy with the job he is doing. - His rating for trustworthiness has fallen nine points since July to just 30 percent. An overwhelming 70 percent say he is far too concerned with public relations and "spin doctoring."

  • 10 ways to sex up a dossier - A close analysis shows that these were far from simply presentational changes, as Downing Street claims. They were clearly inserted to make the case for the need for urgent action against Iraq, and then to justify war.
  • Blair 'knew Iraq threat limited' - Before the war started Mr Blair privately admitted that Saddam Hussein had no weapons posing a "real and present danger", Mr Cook said. - He added that Mr Blair had appeared prepared to go to war regardless of any progress made by UN weapons inspectors.
  • Blair 'not welcome' at war service - Richard Green, a businessman from Grantham, Lincolnshire, claimed Mr Blair had lied to the nation about the need for war and was ultimately to blame for the deaths of 51 British troops. "He shouldn't be there because he's the one that killed them,"

The case against the Prime Minister is strengthened, they claim, by his failure to get UN sanction for the war.

  • Blair 'dishonest, shallow and cheap' in justifying Bush visit, says Cook - Mr Cook attacks Mr Blair for attributing the huge protests planned next week to "resurgent anti-Americanism". He says this is "a dishonest, shallow, cheap argument, not worthy of such a consummate communicator ... It is entirely possible to want warm relations with the American people while keeping a prudent distance from the foreign adventures of President Bush." - He urges the Prime Minister to revive Britain's self-respect by standing up to President Bush's foreign policy, notably by internationalising the political process in Iraq through the United Nations. If Downing Street's relationship with the Bush White House is to survive, he says, it must evolve into a "two-way street".
  • MI6 ran 'dubious' Iraq campaign - British intelligence ran a campaign designed to exaggerate Iraq's weapons of mass destruction, a former US intelligence officer has claimed. - "They took this information and peddled it off to the media, internationally and domestically, allowing inaccurate intelligence data, to appear on the front pages.

This is absolutely frightening. It may be time for the citizens of these nations to arm themselves and prepare to fight for their existence.
  • Blair's show of unity wrecked as Chirac goes on offensive over Iraq - At their first formal summit since the conflict, a deliberate show of public unity was undermined when the French President declared that America's blueprint for Iraq would not hand over power to the Iraqis quickly enough and called for the United Nations to play a greater role in the country's reconstruction.
  • Soldiers in Iraq 'did not have WMD protection' - British forces went into battle in the Iraq war without protective equipment against weapons of mass destruction -- the very "threat" used by Tony Blair to justify joining the American-led invasion. - TVNL Comment: Why make them carry all that protection against something that was not there?
  • Anti-war MPs give Blair no respite over WMD hunt - Tony Blair's delight at the capture of Saddam Hussein was tempered yesterday when Labour MPs warned that it had not changed the fundamental flaws in the legal and moral case for the Iraq war.
  • So was it all worth it? - For Tony Blair, it was the year everything began to turn sour. The feeling grew that the nation had been duped into war, the Hutton inquiry was a potential time bomb, his most trusted lieutenants bailed out, top-up fees rankled and that lipstick moment at No 10 backfired. Then, on a winter evening, at a farm near Tikrit, his luck changed. Zoe Williams reviews the trajectory of the prime minister, war and other events of 2003

They are asking the questions that need to be asked.

  • Blair sticks to Iraq WMD claim despite Kay quitting - British Prime Minister Tony Blair stands by his stance weapons of mass destruction (WMD) will eventually be found in Iraq, despite the top man hunting them saying they did not exist. - TVNL Comment: Blair was wearing red slippers while he clicked his heals together 3 times as he repeated the phrase “there are WMDs, there are WMDs”. Shortly after that Dick Cheney came out from behind the curtain only to say “we sure fooled you!”

  • Blair 'unaware' of WMD threat - Tony Blair has said he was unaware the 45 minute claim over Iraq's WMD meant only battlefield weapons when he urged MPs to vote for war in March last year. - TVNL Comment: If this is true this is the most outrageous example of incompetent leadership in the history of England.
  • Howard calls for Blair to resign - Prime Minister Tony Blair should resign because he failed to ask "basic questions" on claims made in his Iraq dossier, says the Tory leader.

  • A truth too terrible to contemplate - To authorise the war, Goldsmith had to ignore new intelligence - A disturbing question in the whole affair is why Jack Straw, the foreign secretary, apparently dismissed the view of his own independent legal advisers, preferring to adopt the attorney's more comfortable, pro-war, approach. - More disturbing is that the advice of the attorney became more pro-war precisely at the time new intelligence came in saying that Saddam's WMD programme was not nearly as advanced as the government's September 2002 dossier claimed. Moreover, it suggested Iraq did not pose any threat, let alone an imminent one, to Britain or the US. It is inconceivable, sources say, that Goldsmith did not see this new intelligence.

  • War chief reveals legal crisis - Admiral Sir Michael Boyce, who led Britain's forces to war in Iraq last year, has dramatically broken his silence about the legal crisis which engulfed the Government on the eve of battle. - Boyce demanded an unambiguous, one-line note from the Attorney-General saying the war was legal to ensure military chiefs and their soldiers would not be 'put through the mill' at the International Criminal Court.
  • Bush and Blair made secret pact for Iraq war - ·President George Bush first asked Tony Blair to support the removal of Saddam Hussein from power at a private White House dinner nine days after the terror attacks of 11 September, 2001. - Decision came nine days after 9/11 - · Ex-ambassador reveals discussion - But the implications for Blair may be still more explosive. The discussion implies that, even before the bombing of Afghanistan, Blair already knew that the US intended to attack Saddam next, although he continued to insist in public that 'no decisions had been taken' until almost the moment that the invasion began in March 2003.  - This reveals how, during the summer of 2002, when Blair and his closest advisers were mounting an intense diplomatic campaign to persuade Bush to agree to seek United Nations support over Iraq, and promising British support for military action in return, Blair apparently concealed his actions from his Cabinet. - TVNL Comment: Why, in the wake of 9/11, was Iraq an issue at all?
