Why Trump's Republican Senate enablers must be ousted this fall: Former NH GOP chair

Lincoln proectThe Lincoln Project generated strong criticism within Republican circles last week for “going after” a member of the Republican majority in the Senate. We had released an ad comparing Sen. Susan Collins unfavorably to past senators from her state of Maine, including Margaret Chase Smith — best known for being one of the few Republicans to stand up to Joe McCarthy and McCarthyism.

Chase Smith was fearless and will be forever remembered for her “Declaration of Conscience” speech in which she called out national leadership and declared the rights to protest, criticize and hold independent thoughts as basic principles of “American

It is hard for any serious student of history to deny the common themes of McCarthyism and Trumpism. Both are constructed on a foundation of “us vs. them,” suspicion of those who were not born in America, attempts to silence protest and dissent, and demonizing those who hold independent or unpopular beliefs.

Deborah Birx

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) didn’t mince words on Sunday morning, declaring that she has no “confidence” in White House coronavirus response coordinator Dr. Deborah Birx, whom she blamed for President Donald Trump peddling coronavirus disinformation.

Last week, during a closed-door meeting with White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows and Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin, Politico reported that the speaker tore into Birx. “Deborah Birx is the worst. Wow, what horrible hands you’re in,” she reportedly exclaimed.

Pelosi also accused Birx of “spreading disinformation” while simultaneously praising top infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci—who has found himself in Team Trump’s crosshairs of late—as a “hero.”

Louie GohmertLouie Gohmert (R-Texas) said Wednesday he will take an anti-malaria drug that experts have warned doesn’t treat the coronavirus after he tested positive for the virus.

"My doctor and I are all-in," Gohmert said about hydroxychloroquine during a Wednesday evening interview with Fox News, according to Newsweek.

"I got a text before I came on from a friend doctor who just found out he had it, and he started the regimen too — zinc and hydroxychloroquine. And that will start in a day or two, so thank you," the congressman added.

TVNL Comment: The hell with the scientific studies.  Believe the moron in the WH.  Geez. How did this man get to Congress?

Bleak new record as 71,000 Americans died from drug overdoses last year

71,000 in US died of overdose in 2019

Nearly 71,000 Americans died of drug overdoses last year, a new record that predates the Covid-19 crisis, which the White House and many experts believe will drive such deaths even higher.

Preliminary numbers released Wednesday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show the trend is driven by fentanyl and similar synthetic opioids, which accounted for 36,500 overdose deaths. Deaths involving cocaine and methamphetamine also are rising.

With billions of dollars devoted to ending the opioid epidemic, policymakers had hoped overdose deaths would continue to decline, or at least plateau, after 2018 showed a dip for the first time in three decades.

Trump to renew challenges to financial recors

According to a joint filing by lawyers for Trump and Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance, the president plans by July 27 to file a complaint raising arguments against Vance’s grand jury subpoena, which Trump said the nation’s highest court allowed him to make.

Vance countered that most of these arguments have already been rejected in the litigation, and Trump deserves no special treatment because he is president. The district attorney agreed not to enforce the subpoena through July 27.

U.S. District Judge Victor Marrero in Manhattan has scheduled a Thursday hearing on the matter.

Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt tests positive for coronavirus

Kevin StittOklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt announced Wednesday that he has tested positive for coronavirus, becoming the first governor since the start of the pandemic to publicly announce a positive diagnosis.

“I got tested yesterday for Covid-19 and the results came back positive,” Stitt told reporters. “I feel fine; I felt a little bit achy yesterday.”

The Republican governor said he is isolating from his family and working from home. He resisted calls to roll back Oklahoma’s reopening plans, which are being tested by a viral resurgence.

TVNL Comment: Hey, Governor Stitt:  Did you have fun at the Trump rally without masks or social distancing?  We surely hope it was worth getting the virus.  Idiotic behavior warrants idiotic consequesnces.
