US judge blocks Trump administration from fast-tracking deportations

Judge MurphyA federal judge on Friday blocked U.S. President Donald Trump's administration from deporting migrants to countries with which they had no existing relationship without giving them a chance to raise claims that they would face persecution or torture if sent there.

U.S. District Judge Brian Murphy in Boston issued a nationwide temporary restraining order designed to protect migrants subject to final orders of removal from being swiftly deported to countries other than those that had already been identified during immigration proceedings.

His decision came in a lawsuit filed on Sunday by a group of migrants represented by immigrant rights advocates challenging a policy U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement recently adopted that is aimed at fast-tracking the deportations of thousands of migrants who had been previously released from detention.

Houthi rebelsA federal judge on Thursday said he will order the Trump administration to preserve records of a text message chat in which senior national security officials discussed sensitive details of plans for a U.S. military strike against Yemen’s Houthis.

U.S. District Judge James Boasberg said during a hearing that he’ll issue a temporary restraining order barring administration officials from destroying messages sent over the encrypted messaging app Signal.

A nonprofit watchdog, American Oversight, requested the order. A government attorney said the administration already was taking steps to collect and save the messages.

The Atlantic published the entire Signal chat on Wednesday. Its editor-in-chief, Jeffrey Goldberg, had been added to a discussion that included Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, national security adviser Michael Waltz, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Vice President JD Vance and Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard.

Smithsonian museumsPresident Trump on Thursday signed an executive order seeking to exert more control over what is displayed at Smithsonian museums and federal sites, citing what the White House called “divisive narratives” promoted by certain museums.

The executive order claimed that the Smithsonian Institution, which operates numerous museums in the nation’s capital, “has, in recent years, come under the influence of a divisive, race-centered ideology.”

“This shift has promoted narratives that portray American and Western values as inherently harmful and oppressive,” the order states.

The order cites an exhibit at the American Art Museum titled “Stories of Race and American Sculpture” and references at the National Museum of African American History and Culture that assert “hard work,” “individualism,” and “the nuclear family” are parts of “white culture”;

Stefanik nomination pulled

President Trump’s decision to yank Rep. Elise Stefanik’s (R-N.Y.) nomination to be ambassador to the United Nations is prompting a plethora of questions about the New York Republican’s future on Capitol Hill.

In his statement announcing the move, Trump said the congresswoman would “rejoin the House Leadership Team.” Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) echoed that plan, saying he would “invite her to return to the leadership table immediately.”

But it is unclear where Stefanik will fit in after relinquishing the position of House GOP conference chair, which she held for nearly four years, upon her nomination for U.N. ambassador.
