At least 12 people died and several more were injured after a bus carrying cruise ship passengers flipped over on a highway in eastern Mexico early Tuesday, officials said.
Seven Americans and two Swedish citizens are among the nearly two dozen injured, according to Vincente Martin, the civil defense spokesman for Quintana Roo state. Authorities have not yet been able to ascertain the nationalities of the dead, Martin added.
Miami-based Royal Caribbean Cruises confirmed that 27 passengers from two of its ships, Celebrity Equinox and Serenade of the Seas, were involved in the "heartbreaking" crash, which happened around 10 a.m. as the bus was en route to the Chacchoben ruins south of Tulum.
"Our hearts go out to all those involved," the cruise line said in a statement to the Daily News. "We are doing all we can to care for our guests."
