Together for Palestine concert: Benedict Cumberbatch, Damon Albarn and Neneh Cherry take stage at galvanising and star-studded gig for Gaza

Together for PalestineThe sheer scale of it was boggling. A total of 69 artists, speakers and activists were to appear at Ovo Arena Wembley.

There were stars of music: Damon Albarn, Bastille, PinkPantheress, Hot Chip and a festival’s worth of others. There were stars of stage and screen: Benedict Cumberbatch, Florence Pugh, Guy Pearce, Ramy Youssef and a huge supporting cast. There were the firebrands, the podcasters, the people you’re sure are important but you have no idea why. And there were the people who, well, you don’t really know what they’re bringing: the former footballer Eric Cantona, the Love Island host Laura Whitmore, the Chicken Shop Dates YouTuber Amelia Dimoldenberg.

To one of the evening’s artists, Paul Weller, it might have all seemed very familiar: the combination of righteousness and music was reminiscent of the big events of the Thatcher years – the GLC Jobs for a Change festival in Battersea Park in July 1985, or the Artists Against Apartheid’s Festival for Freedom on Clapham Common the following summer. (Weller played with the Style Council at the latter, which offered a similarly eclectic experience: Archbishop Trevor Huddleston reminiscing about giving Gary Kemp his first guitar, before Spandau Ballet premiered Through the Barricades.)

Bernie Sanders Says Israel Is Committing Genocide In Gaza

Bernie SandersIsrael has gone well past self-defense and is now conducting a genocide in the Gaza Strip, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) said Wednesday in a lengthy statement laying out his agreement with a United Nations panel that found the situation met the legal definition of genocide.

Sanders is the first senator to apply the term to Israel, which has been waging war in the tiny strip of land with the aid of U.S. taxpayer dollars for nearly two years. A few other elected Democrats, such as Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), have been using the word for months.

House Minority Whip Katherine Clark (D-Mass.) said last month that there was “genocide and destruction” unfolding in Gaza, but later backpedaled.

Sanders cited a number of devastating statistics: Over 65,000 people have been killed, with more bodies still lying under rubble. Of those deaths, Eighty-three percent of those deaths were civilians. Hundreds were aid workers and journalists. Seventy percent of all structures have been destroyed. Ninety percent of water and sanitation facilities have been made inoperable.

NATO at War With Russia, Kremlin Says

NATO at war with PutinNATO is "at war with Russia" over Ukraine, the spokesman for Russian President Vladimir President has said.

The comments by Dmitry Peskov come amid a spike in tensions between the alliance and Moscow following Poland's shooting down of Russian drones that entered the alliance member's airspace last week.

Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski said at the time that the drone incursion was a ploy by Russia to test the alliance.

Peskov said Monday it was "obvious" the alliance was "de facto involved in this war." Newsweek has contacted NATO for comment.

NATO has not directly entered the war, nor are its troops deployed to fight, but Peskov's comments echo those made by the Kremlin and its supporters who refer to the assistance Kyiv has received from NATO allies, including the U.S.

His comments highlight the friction between Moscow and NATO as concerns grow Russia is testing the alliance's resolve, with tensions heightened further after Romania said it had to deploy fighter jets in response to another incursion of its air space.

Oscar-Winning Palestinian Director Says Israeli Soldiers Raided His West Bank Home

Basel AdraPalestinian Oscar-winning director Basel Adra said that Israeli soldiers conducted a raid at his West Bank home on Saturday, searching for him and going through his wife’s phone.

Israeli settlers attacked his village, injuring two of his brothers and one cousin, Adra told The Associated Press. He accompanied them to the hospital. While there, he said that he heard from family in the village that nine Israeli soldiers had stormed his home.

The soldiers asked his wife, Suha, for his whereabouts and went through her phone, he said, while his 9-month-old daughter was home. They also briefly detained one of his uncles, he said.

As of Saturday night, Adra said he had no way of returning home to check on his family, because soldiers were blocking the entrance to the village and he was scared of being detained.

Israel’s military didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Adra has spent his career as a journalist and filmmaker chronicling settler violence in Masafer Yatta, the southern reaches of West Bank where he was born. After settlers attacked his co-director, Hamdan Ballal, in March, he told the AP that he felt they were being targeted more intensely since winning the Oscar.

As of Saturday night, Adra said he had no way of returning home to check on his family, because soldiers were blocking the entrance to the village and he was scared of being detained.

Israel’s military didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Fed Governor Cook Actually Did Declare Her Atlanta Property As Vacation Home: Reuters

Lisa CookA loan estimate for an Atlanta home purchased by Lisa Cook, the Federal Reserve governor accused of mortgage fraud by the Trump administration, shows that Cook had declared the property as a “vacation home,” according to a document reviewed by Reuters.

The document, dated May 28, 2021, was issued to Cook by her credit union in the weeks before she completed the purchase and shows that she had told the lender that the Atlanta property wouldn’t be her primary residence. The document appears to counter other documentation that Cook’s critics have cited in support of their claims that she committed mortgage fraud by reporting two different homes as her primary residence, two independent real-estate experts said.

Reuters was unable to reach Cook for comment. She has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing regarding her properties, which also include a home in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and an investment property in Massachusetts.

Recap: NYC marks 24 years since 9/11 ahead of Trump visit

9/11 rememberedTwenty-four years after Sept. 11, 2001, Americans remember the nearly 3,000 lives in the terror attacks at the World Trade Center in lower Manhattan, at the Pentagon and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

The remembrances are being held during a time of increased political tensions. The 9/11 anniversary, often promoted as a day of national unity, comes a day after conservative activist Charlie Kirk was shot and killed while speaking at a college in Utah. Follow along for live updates.

Many in the crowd at ground zero held up photos of lost loved ones as a moment of silence marked the exact time when the first hijacked plane struck the iconic twin towers.

Family members then read aloud the names of the victims, with many giving personal remembrances, well wishes and updates on their lives.

Zoe Doyle, daughter of Frank Joseph Doyle, said her family created a nonprofit in his honor that’s built schools in South Africa and is feeding and educating thousands of children.

Manuel DaMota Jr. said he remembers his father and namesake, Manuel DaMota, not just with grief, but with gratitude for the example he set.

Newly released video at House UFO hearing appears to show U.S. missile striking and bouncing off orb

hELLFIRE MISSILESA newly-released video captured by a U.S. reaper drone shows a glowing orb off of the coast of Yemen. Then in the video, a Hellfire missile suddenly struck the unidentified object and bounced off of it.

Rep. Eric Burlison, a Republican from Missouri, shared the video at a House Oversight hearing on Tuesday on what the military calls "Unidentified Aerial Phenomena" or better known as UFOs.

The video, which is dated Oct. 30, 2024, was provided by a whistleblower and when slowed down, the missile can be seen continuing on its own path after striking the orb.

A recent government report revealed the government received more than 750 new UAP sightings between May 2023 and June 2024, leaving lawmakers digging into the mystery and national security concerns posed by the objects.

"We've never seen a Hellfire missile hit a target and bounce off," said Lue Elizondo, a former senior intelligence official with the Pentagon.

Democrat wins Virginia special election to replace deceased Rep. Gerry Connolly

James WalkinshawFairfax County Supervisor James Walkinshaw (D) on Tuesday won the special election to replace his former boss, the late Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-Va.), according to Decision Desk HQ.

Walkinshaw defeated Republican Stewart Whitson, an Army veteran and FBI agent.

Prior to being elected county supervisor in 2019, Walkinshaw served as Connolly’s chief of staff.

Connolly’s seat has been vacant since his death in May. Walkinshaw’s win narrows the Republican majority in the House to 219-213.

The vacancies have likely helped Republicans during crucial votes this year, including the vote to pass the GOP spending megabill, also known as President Trump’s “big, beautiful bill,” in May. The legislation passed by one vote.

Israel calls on famine-stricken residents to flee and targets more high-rises in Gaza City

Gazan high rise buildings taken downThe Israeli army issued evacuation orders and targeted high-rise buildings in Gaza City on Saturday, urging Palestinians to flee south ahead of an escalating offensive to seize the city of nearly 1 million.

Aid groups warn that a large-scale evacuation would exacerbate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza City, which the world’s leading hunger watchdog announced last month was officially suffering from famine as a result of Israeli restrictions on food aid.

Most Palestinian families have been repeatedly displaced in the nearly two-year-long war and say they have nowhere left to go. The Israeli military has previously bombed tent encampments designated as humanitarian zones.

“There is no safe tent, no safe house, no safe place, no safety at all,” said Nadia Marouf, who fled Israel’s offensive in the north with her children and resettled in Gaza City — only to see her tent destroyed Saturday in an Israeli airstrike that wiped out a 15-story building and surrounding encampment.
