President Donald Trump is pausing military aid to Ukraine after last week's confrontation between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, two White House officials confirmed to USA TODAY.

The Trump administration wants to ensure military aid is contributing to resolving the conflict, and it will be reviewed with that goal in mind, an official said.

Withholding aid is the latest sign that the relationship between the Trump administration and Ukrainian leadership has deteriorated. Trump has called for a ceasefire and pushed Zelenskyy to make a deal three years after Russia invaded the country.

Nearly a dozen staff members are on administrative leave and state officials are investigating after an inmate at a New York medium-security prison died over the weekend, prison officials told USA TODAY Monday.

According to information from The New York State Department of Corrections, the 22-year-old prisoner had been housed at Mid-State Correctional Facility in Marcy, N.Y., and died Saturday.

The town of Marcy is near Utica, the county seat of Oneida County.

Officials have not released the inmate's preliminary cause and manner of death.

As of Monday, the prisoner's identity had not been released by officials as they said they were attempting to reach the inmate's next of kin.

Keir Starmer has said Europe is “at a crossroads in history” and must act to support Ukraine to secure a lasting peace as he confirmed the UK and France would lead a “coalition of the willing” to help end the fighting.

After a crucial defence summit in London, Starmer said any plan for a lasting ceasefire would have to be “delivered together” with the US to provide a deterrence to Russia, as he continued attempts to repair frayed ties between Kyiv and Washington.

Starmer announced a deal that would allow Ukraine to use £1.6bn of export finance to buy more than 5,000 air defence missiles, to be made by Thales in Belfast and therefore creating jobs, as part of the government’s plan to boost economic growth.

A commercial spacecraft carrying NASA experiments successfully touched down on the moon's surface early Sunday morning, ushering in a new phase of private space exploration.

American firm Firefly Aerospace, which livestreamed the descent of its Blue Ghost lunar lander, said the craft arrived on the moon's surface at 3:34 a.m. EST.

"You all stuck the landing. We're on the moon," Blue Ghost chief engineer Will Coogan said on the livestream, eliciting cheers from the mission control room.

Several companies have attempted commercial lunar landings in recent years. A spacecraft sent to the moon by Houston-based Intuitive Machines last year stopped operating after landing on its side, and in 2023 a lander launched by the Japanese company ispace crashed onto the lunar surface.

The shift in policy could make the US vulnerable to hacking attacks by Russia, experts warned, and appeared to reflect the warming of relations between Donald Trump and Russia’s president, Vladimir Putin.

Two recent incidents indicate the US is no longer characterizing Russia as a cybersecurity threat.

Liesyl Franz, deputy assistant secretary for international cybersecurity at the state department, said in a speech last week before a United Nations working group on cybersecurity that the US was concerned by threats perpetrated by some states but only named China and Iran, with no mention of Russia in her remarks.
