Fragile Gaza Ceasefire Intact For Now As Israel, Hamas Reach New Agreement

Palestinian prisonersIsrael and Hamas have reached an agreement to exchange the bodies of dead Israeli hostages for the release of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners, keeping the fragile ceasefire deal intact for at least a few more days. As part of the agreement, the bodies of four Israeli hostages will be released in exchange for all Palestinian prisoners, Egyptian state-linked media reported late on Tuesday.

Israel has delayed the release of 600 Palestinian prisoners since Saturday to protest what it called the "cruel treatment" of hostages during their release by Hamas, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu describing them as "humiliating ceremonies". The Palestinian group claimed the delay was a "serious violation" of their ceasefire and that talks on a second phase were not possible until they were freed.

The deadlock had threatened to collapse the five-week-old fragile truce when the current six-week first phase of the deal expires this weekend.

On Tuesday, Hamas confirmed the new agreement, under Egyptian supervision, saying it was part of the first phase of its ceasefire deal with Israel.

House Republicans advance plan for Trump's legislative agenda in dramatic turnaround

Mike Johnson– The House voted 217-215 to advance the GOP plan for President Donald Trump's legislative agenda Tuesday, after an all-day whip effort convinced a few Republican holdouts to come on board in a dramatic last-minute turnaround.

It was the first major test of the House Republican conference, which seeks to pass Trump's priorities for border, energy and taxes through one of the narrowest legislative margins in modern American history, and a gauntlet for House Speaker Mike Johnson as he sought to keep his members united.

Trump had endorsed the House's plan to roll all of his campaign promises into one "big, beautiful bill," and it was on Johnson to deliver the votes necessary to unlock the process to pass it.

Johnson could only lose one Republican vote and still succeed. After nearly two hours on the House floor whipping votes, Johnson appeared to have failed and canceled the vote before abruptly calling members back to the chamber. The proposal passed around 8:25 p.m.

Trump floats $5 million ‘gold card’ as a route to U.S. citizenship

Trump to give $5m gold card

U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday floated the idea of replacing a visa program for foreign investors with a so-called “gold card” that could be bought for $5 million as a route to American citizenship.

Trump told reporters he will replace the “EB-5” immigrant investor visa program, which allows foreign investors of large sums of money that create or preserve U.S. jobs to become permanent residents, with a so-called “gold card.”

The EB-5 program grants “green cards” to foreigners promising to invest in U.S. businesses.

“We are going to be selling a gold card,” Trump said. “We are going to be putting a price on that card of about $5 million,” he added.

“It’s going to give you green card privileges plus its going to be a route to (American) citizenship, and wealthy people would be coming into our country by buying this card,” Trump said, adding that details about the scheme will come out in two weeks.

Judge Blocks Trump's 'Irrational,' 'Ill-Conceived' Freeze On Federal Spending

Judge AliKhanA federal judge in Washington, D.C., granted a preliminary injunction Tuesday against the Trump administration aimed at stopping the sweeping freeze to federal disbursements that has sown anger and anxiety across the country in the last month.

The National Council of Nonprofits and a collection of other groups sued the Office of Management and Budget in late January after the agency’s acting director at the time, Matthew Vaeth, issued a memo calling for a widespread pause on the flow of federal funds until the Trump administration could ensure the spending aligns with its priorities.

Republicans Downplay Medicaid Cuts Amid Town Hall Voter Backlash

Mike JohnsonRepublicans are feeling the sting of voter anger at recent town hall meetings where lawmakers’ constituents complained about Elon Musk slashing the government and the House GOP’s plan to cut Medicaid.

At their first press conference back in the Capitol after a weeklong recess, House Republican leaders dubiously insisted that their budget resolution won’t touch Medicaid and that the town hall attendees lacked a legitimate grievance.

“Videos of protesters yelling at members of Congress went viral, right? But the content focused on the confrontation, not the why. Some of the people that hijacked those town halls are happy with the bloated status quo,” said Rep. Lisa McClain (R-Mich.).

Federal judge blocks Trump’s refugee pause

Refugee program reunited father and childA federal judge on Tuesday blocked President Donald Trump’s effort to suspend the U.S. refugee program.

The ruling came in a challenge filed by several refugee resettlement organizations whose lawsuit earlier this month argued that President Donald Trump's indefinite suspension of the U.S. refugee program was unlawful and causing irreparable harm.

While a president has substantial authority over the program, that authority "is not limitless," U.S. District Judge Jamal Whitehead in Washington State said during a court hearing on Tuesday, according to Reuters.

"I cannot ignore Congress's detailed framework for refugee admissions and the limits it places on the president's ability to suspend the same," he said, ruling that a preliminary injunction was warranted given the likelihood of "irreparable harms, including refugees stranded after selling their possessions, agencies laying off hundreds of staff, and family reunifications suspended indefinitely."
