All over the world, people skeptical of religion face profound mistreatment.

Aan was arrested in a small town in West Sumatra on January 18 after a number of local residents assaulted him at work in an act of self-styled vigilantism. They were reacting to some of his postings on a Facebook page devoted to atheism: a note entitled “the Prophet Muhammad was attracted to his own daughter-in-law”; a comic suggesting the Prophet slept with his wife’s maid; and a status update reading, “If you believe in god, then please show him to me.”

Supreme Court rejects appeals of foreign detainees held more than 10 years at Guantanamo

US Supreme CourtThe Supreme Court on Monday declined to take a new look at the rights of foreign prisoners held for the past decade at the Guantanamo Bay naval base in Cuba.

Four years after pronouncing that detainees who face no charges have a right to challenge their ongoing confinement, the justices rejected appeals arguing that the federal appeals court in Washington has largely ignored the high court’s command.

Israel violates international human rights law: HRW

Human Rights Watch (HRW) has criticized Israel for a new piece of legislation that allows the detention of migrants without charge, stressing that the law is in violation of international human rights regulations.

On June 3, Tel Aviv announced that migrants who illegally crossed into Israel could face a detention of up to three years.

Honour student who works two jobs to support her siblings after her parents split up and left town is put in JAIL for missing school due to exhaustion

An eleventh grader in Texas was thrown in jail - just for missing school.

However, honour student Diane Tran, 17, is no lazy truant. In fact, she's quite the opposite.

Since her parents divorced and left her and her two siblings, she has been the sole breadwinner and works two jobs to keep the family afloat.

873 wrongful convictions shine spotlight on judicial system

JusticePerjury, faulty eyewitness identification and prosecutorial misconduct are the leading reasons for wrongful convictions, according to the first national registry of exonerations compiled by university researchers.

The database, assembled in a collaboration by the University of Michigan and Northwestern University, has identified 873 faulty convictions in the past 23 years that have been recognized by prosecutors, judges or governors.
