Study: fluoridated water causes brain damage in children

tap waterA new study pre-published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives confirms that fluoridated water causes brain damage in children. The most recent among 23 others pertaining to fluoride and lowered IQ levels, the new study so strongly proves that fluoride is a dangerous, brain-destroying toxin that experts say it could be the one that finally ends water fluoridation.

"This is the 24th study that has found this association," explained Paul Connett, Ph.D., director of the Fluoride Action Network (FAN). "[B]ut this study is stronger than the rest because the authors have controlled for key confounding variables and in addition to correlating lowered IQ with levels of fluoride in the water, the authors found a correlation between lowered IQ and fluoride levels in children's blood."

False Readings Prompt Glucose Test Strip Recall

FDAThe maker of multiple brands of glucose test strips -- Abbott Diabetes Care -- issued a voluntary recall of several hundred product lots of the test strips, due to falsely low readouts of blood glucose which could result in over- or under-treatment of diabetic patients.

The FDA warned that false results from glucose test strips may lead diabetic patients to try to raise their blood glucose unnecessarily, or they may fail to treat elevated blood glucose because of a false, low reading -- both scenarios posing a health threat.

Health insurers face new rules over price hikes

Health insurers face new rulesU.S. health insurance companies that want to increase premiums by 10 percent or more next year would face tougher government scrutiny under new rules proposed on Tuesday.

The rules, called for under the sweeping healthcare law passed in March, would require insurers with price increases of 10 percent or more in 2011 to submit data justifying the higher rates for states or, in some cases, the federal government to assess.

Hospital hired models in lab coats and heels 'to attract men'

An American hospital group spent millions of dollars hiring models in lab coats, short skirts and high heels to recruit men for DNA tests and quietly overcharge them for the privilege.

The models, who were in their 20s, allegedly told the men the tests would barely cost anything, before billing them an average of $4,300 (£2,770) each via their health insurance – about 40 times more than the typical cost.

Probable carcinogen hexavalent chromium found in drinking water of 31 U.S. cities

drinking water in 31 cities contaminatedAn environmental group that analyzed the drinking water in 35 cities across the United States, including Bethesda and Washington, found that most contained hexavalent chromium, a probable carcinogen that was made famous by the film "Erin Brockovich."

The study, which will be released Monday by the Environmental Working Group, is the first nationwide analysis of hexavalent chromium in drinking water to be made public.
